You booked a blood test, the lab handed you a slip that says "fasting required," and now you have a dozen small questions. Can you drink water? Does black coffee count? Should you take your morning pills? Is it a problem that you did leg day yesterday?

These details matter more than most people realize. A few hours of the wrong preparation can push a result outside its reference range, trigger a false alarm, or force you back for a repeat draw. The good news is that preparing well is simple once you understand the logic. Do You Actually Need to Fast?

Fasting is the single most misunderstood part of blood test prep. Most tests do not require it at all. Fasting means nothing to eat or drink except water for 8 to 12 hours before your draw, and it exists for one reason: to capture your true metabolic baseline before food scrambles it.

Only a short list of tests genuinely need it. A lipid panel (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and especially triglycerides) is best drawn after 9 to 12 hours fasting, because a recent meal can raise triglycerides for hours. Fasting glucose needs at least 8 hours, since any carbohydrate spikes blood sugar and erases your baseline.
